The NYRC Smart braceTM is a state-of-the-art, custom-fit scoliosis brace, based on the tried and true principles of Dr Rigo and Cheneau.
The NYRC Smart braceTM seeks to maximize 3 dimensional in-brace correction and balance, based on each patient’s individual anatomy. Understanding that success in bracing depends on both in-brace correction and time in brace (compliance), the NYRC Smart braceTM utilizes a unique “smart strap” which communicates using bluetooth to a custom application allowing real time observation of brace wear and fit. Columbia University Medical Center in New York City is offering the Rigo Cheneau Brace. This is a highly advanced brace that provides individual scoliosis therapy. This unique bracing system was developed by Dr. Cheneau and later improved by Dr. Rigo. Treatment is designed to account for all aspects of the scoliosis curve. Each brace is individually manufactured for each scoliosis patient. The desired treatment is a gradual elongation and straightening of the spine. The Rigo Cheneau Type brace is a thermoplastic brace designed to treat scoliosis conservatively while taking into consideration that scoliosis is a three-dimensional deformity. This is as well a 3-dimensional correctional brace which has significant pressure and expansion areas built into the brace, which provides correction in all three anatomical planes. It should follow the general correction principle as was written by Dubousset: “detorsion and sagittal plane normalization, which would affect correction of the coronal and transversal planes, resulting in some elongation of the spine, without any significant distraction force,” (Rigo, 2001, Wood 2003). The WCR brace utilizes both X-rays and clinical photos of the patient to determine curve type and brace design.
